Serena Ford, a 25 year old from Redditch, is set to pound the pavements at this year’s Great Birmingham Run in aid of YSS Worcestershire Young Carers.

Serena, who is boldly taking on the half marathon as her first long-distance run, chose to support Worcestershire Young Carers after receiving support from the service when she was 12. She said: “Worcestershire Young Carers supported me through my teens, whilst I was caring for my Mum. The key workers were all so helpful, offering support and advice, and they introduced me to young people on a similar journey to mine. There aren't many people that understand the pressure and responsibility of being a young carer - but everyone at YSS did, and for that I will be forever grateful. I've always wanted to give something back. I know that the money I raise will be put to good use funding trips and activities for other young carers to enjoy.”

The Great Birmingham Run will take place in the second city on Sunday 14 October. Starting on Broad Street the route will pass some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including Cadburys and the Cricket Ground.

Serena said: “My favourite memory of Worcestershire Young Carers was skiing in Val D’lsere in December 2007. It was an amazing experience and one that I’ll never forget! I’ve run 5K before but never anything further. I’m ready for the challenge though, I can’t think of a more deserving charity!”

Worcestershire Young Carers has been successfully delivered by YSS since 2003 and currently supports more than 450 young carers in the county every year. As well as clubs, trips and activities throughout the year, the service provides one to one support, assessment and signposting to children and young people aged seven to 25 who have a caring role at home.
